Life, Tech and Unimportant Minutiae

Q1+ 2014 Notes

Created by cmiles on 5/1/2014.

This blog didn't receive any attention in the first part of this year - two different projects absorbed my attention: HikeLemmon.com - this is a continuation/re-work of cmiles-outside.info which is a long term project to collect/produce hiking information about the Santa Catalina Mountains and programming projects at work. For whatever reason wanting to create has made me slightly impatient for reading longer works - this may be the least I have read in 4 months in years...

Life Is Sweet (1990) - A sort of family comedy set near London - certainly some entertaining moments but overall maybe just a period/place I couldn't get into because I don't know (not even really sure I had enough reference to really know what was funny/sad/being parodied etc...). Rating: 2 of 5

Mr. Nobody (2009) - A semi-science fiction tale with a fantastic shifting sense of reality - maybe didn't quite come together into something I found special but did like this was different. Rating: 3 of 5

American Hustle (2013) - Wow - tons of hype and great ratings for this period con/crime piece. Some good details - nice performances, plot details I did not guess too quickly - but I just really didn't care about these people - I think it might be a certain lack of connection to the period? Rating: 2 of 5

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) - More Hunger Games! No better or worse than the others - kind of fun... Rating: 2 of 5

Chasing Ice (2012) - Ok, so I fell asleep on this one - there were some AMAZING pictures of glaciers calving and some pretty interesting details about setting up and filming these amazing and changing locations - but dozed off... Rating: 3 of 5

The Runner - David Horton setting a FKT on the PCT - some great perspectives and interviews, would have loved to see just a little more of the trail but what a challenge to film a journey like this. Rating: 3 of 5

Instructions Not Included (2013) - Mostly Father/Daughter/physical comedy with a few twists - ok... Rating: 2 of 5

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) - Moonrise Kingdom was unbelievable - The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou wow - so I went into this with pretty high expectations - pretty quirky story but fell a little flat/short of expectations - maybe too strangely similiar to other films? Or maybe the cast was not quite as good? Well worth watching, but not my favorite Wes Anderson. Rating: 3 of 5

Enter the Void (2010) - a unique film following the person and spirit of a foreign drug dealer in Tokyo. The centerpiece here really has to be the unique style and visuals - I was truly entranced somewhere halfway thru - but I really could not hang on for the full duration of the film. Rating: 3 of 5

Happy People: A Year in the Taiga (2010) - Another film I fell asleep on... This follows the lives of a number of people and a number of trappers in the village of Bakhtia in the Siberian taiga. What I really loved was the scenery and the sense of isolation - as usual an interesting tale from Werner Herzog - even though I fell asleep it did sort of feel like there was another documentary here, maybe more about the wilderness/wildlife or... Rating: 3 of 5

Thor: The Dark World (2013) - Action... Rating: 1 of 5

Man of Steel (2013) - Wow, I think I appreciate the idea of making money on a commercial endeavor - but this was pretty disappointing for another revisit of the origin of Superman. Rating: 1 of 5

No Country for Old Men (2007) - An ultra-violent border lands story with action, strange characters and just a bit of introspection. The land in this film is not exactly the desert where I live but it feels familiar and the strangeness and violence seems somehow familiar. Rating: 4 of 5

The IT Crowd - Wow - this is awesomely funny!!!!!!!!! rating: 5 of 5

Game of Thrones (season 3) - Another season, I am sure I will watch the next also... Rating: 3 of 5
