I read this book for the first time in 1997 (after seeing David Foster Wallace on Charlie Rose) - it was a true revelation to read something in such a unique style that used language, settings, themes and characters that were familiar to my life/generation and that - to some small extent anyway - I immediately connected to and understood. This book was a gateway to quite a few other authors and books and each time I read it again it still feels important and relevant. This is certainly among the my top few favorite books (maybe #1?), but I often hesitate to recommend it - the length and complexity are wonderful but can also be a bit daunting...
