With the upcoming release of the translated version of Haruki Murakami's 1Q84 it seemed like an interesting time to read a classic - George Orwell's 1984. I was excited when I started reading - but I was underwhelmed by the time I finished... Perhaps I should have approached this as more of a research/learning project and tried harder to understand the context for Orwell's story? I felt like I should have been shocked and appalled at the world of 1984 - but I think the novel shows it age and that history and literature since 1949 dulls the horror of this story.
